1000 Tales

1000 Tales is an immersive exhibition celebrating children's literature. Commissioned by The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, opening August 2026 at South Shields.

Discover 1000 Tales at The Word with a series of hand-built rooms, each one evoking countless children's stories. Wander and wonder through… The Princess and the Pea bedroom… An indoor forest of silver birch… A bare bear room. All is not as it seems as you encounter creatures and experiences along the way.

The exhibition isn't a retelling of any one story. It's remembering the distant echoes of childhood stories once we grow up - it’s the feelings a good story leaves behind, no matter your age.
